Application to universities in Belgium

For you to apply to study in Belgium at undergraduate levels, you are expected to hold a secondary school leaving certificate that is recognized by relevant authorities, or an equivalent statement for that certificate. You are able to connect with different authorities for equivalence statements, depending on whether you intend to attend a university in the French Community, in the Flemish Community, or in the German-speaking Community.

Do note that applications to study in Belgium are sent individually to each institution, and specific admissions requirements are determined by each institution. Generally, those who intend  to study medicine/dentistry, arts, management and (only in the French Community) engineering sciences are expected to take an entrance exam. You may also be required to take an exam to prove your proficiency in French or Dutch language. You’re expected  to pay your tuition fees before you receiving full enrollment.

Tuition fees in Belgium

The good news is that Belgians and other EU students study on free tuition because, higher education is financed mostly by the state. Nevertheless, students are expected to pay an annual registration fee, for every year of their studies. This amount varies and depends largely on the institution, the type of program and students eligibility for financial support.

Tuition fees in Belgium equally differ depending largely on whether the program is offered by an institution in the Flemish, German-speaking, or French community. Note that students from the EU would ideally pay a maximum of €835 (~US$910) per year, while international students from outside the EU will pay roughly  €835-4,175 (~US$910-4,560) and may need to pay additional registration fees – as well, as we said earlier the amount depends on the institution and program. You can find specific information about the total fees amount by connecting with your chosen institution.

Student accommodation in Belgium

University accommodation in Belgium is usually available for short-term stay or international students; however, if you decide to rent out  a private flat, it’s very important to sign a one-year contract. You should expect to pay between €150 (US$200) and €400 (US$540) per month, depending on whether you choose university housing or private accommodation, and depending on where you intend to study in Belgium. Suppose you rent your own one-bed apartment, this would likely cost around €675 (~US$740) per month in a city center, or €500 (~US$550) outside the center.

Home-stays are equally popular in Belgium, and afford students the chance to learn about Belgian culture first-hand, while also improving their language skills. However, please note that this option is more commonly used by short-term students who are, for example, studying in a language school. So do well to connect with your university’s student support services or international student department for further information on finding student accommodation in Belgium.
