History

St Andrews was established in 1413. The university’s first few years were not so smooth: in 1426 for example, King James made an attempt to move the university to Perth, in 1470, tons of undergraduate and postgraduate and students were removed from the institution for attacking the Dean with bows and arrows, and in 1544 the university officially banned beards.

Travel

During semester period, the university operates a night bus service between the university library, the Students’ Association building, and many halls of residence.
You’ll find a bus station which is located in the town centre, and a railway station 6 miles outside St Andrews, with buses moving through the station every 10 minutes.
There are also international airports, located at Edinburgh (48 miles), Aberdeen (81 miles) and Glasgow (82 miles).
