UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS, TUITION FEES, SCHOLARSHIPS, ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND MORE

    The University of Leeds is a redbrick university located in the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire.

    Officially established in the early 20th century, it was one of the first colleges in the UK for students of all faiths and backgrounds, set up to challenge the exclusivity of Cambridge and Oxford

    Initially the college focussed purely on scientific studies before eventually introducing Classics,  Modern Literature and History. Today, the University of Leeds is among the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities. It offers over 500 undergraduate  courses and more than 200 postgraduate-degree courses. Teaching staff have received 26 National Teaching Fellowships – more than any other university in the UK.

    With more than 30,000 students – 5,000 of them international, from over 100 countries – the university prides itself as a true multicultural and international institution.

    Its partnership with Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu, China was the first overseas school to be set up by the University of Leeds and offers Chinese and Asian students a unique UK-Chinese engineering curriculum.

    Leeds University Union offers over 250 clubs and societies and its students’ union was the first in the UK to be awarded ‘excellent’ status by the National Union of Students (NUS) as part of its Quality Students’ Unions accreditation scheme. Leeds alumni include the renowned late historian Herbert Read, the singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, and Piers Sellers, the astronaut.

    Facilities

    A recent £520m has been invested into transforming Leeds campus facilities, which includes state-of-the-art sport and well-being centers, a 25m eight lane swimming pool and the largest fitness suite of any UK university. Leeds is situated on a single-site campus, just a short walk from Leeds’ vibrant city centre, with access to art galleries, shopping malls, museums and sports facilities, as well as green spaces

    Rankings

    The University of Leeds is currently ranked 11th in the UK according to the Guardian University Guide 2020, and among the world’s top 100 according to the latest QS World University Rankings 2019. Leeds is also part of the prestigious Russell Group – an elite collection of 24 research intensive universities in the UK.

    Accommodation

    Scholarships & funding

    The University of Leeds offers a number of impressive scholarships for international students, ranging from partial fee awards to grants to allowances. Scholarships are awarded at both university-level and school-level and it is highly recommended that students make enquiries and apply for them early. Students need to get an offer of a place before they are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

    The following scholarships are available:

    Undergraduate scholarships

    The International Undergraduate Science and Engineering Scholarship grants  £2,000 per year up to a maximum of four years subject to satisfactory student’s academic progression.

    Biological Sciences Dean’s Excellence Scholarship

    This scholarship grants  £5,000 each year up to a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory progression.

    School of Psychology Head of School Excellence Scholarship

    Beneficiaries of this scholarship gets a grant of  £4,000 a year up to a maximum of four years, subject to satisfactory progression.

    School of Law International Scholarship

    This grants £2,500 in tuition fee reduction. This is for freshman year only, there is a scholarship available in years two and three subject to excelling in academics.

    Postgraduate scholarships

    The university offers a number of postgraduate funding for both master’s and research students. These awards are offered on a subject-by-subject basis and vary in value.

    Entry requirements

    Undergraduate

    The university recognises and accepts a wide range of international qualifications. Some degrees require prior study of specific subjects, especially within the sciences, engineering and languages. All students are required to demonstrate suitable proficiency in the English Language. There are foundation courses for students who do not meet the required academic requirements for direct entry.

    Postgraduate

    For the taught master’s programmes, students will normally be required to have obtained a first-degree equivalent to a 2:1 degree in the UK. The university also considers evidence of relevant personal, professional and educational experience for some of the postgraduate programmes. Students must also meet the university’s English Language requirements.

    Research

    The university usually requires students to hold a first-class or second-class honours degree, or equivalent qualification from an accredited institution, in a subject relevant to their proposed field of research. Students must possess the English language proficiency to meet the university’s English Language requirements .

    Graduate outcomes

    A degree from the University of Leeds is highly respected and will provide students with the edge they need to excel in their careers. The university’s Career Centre offers a daily drop-in service and  one-to-one appointments, helps students find and apply for competitive jobs, along with offering access to events and exclusive job opportunities. The Centre also assists students to work out effective employment strategies that puts them one step ahead in today’s competitive job market.

    Leeds graduates are highly sought after by leading employers, including Google, IBM, Accenture, Jaguar Land Rover, Unilever and many others who regularly visit the campus to host career fairs for the purposes of recruitment.

    Postgraduate study

    Those who go onto pursue postgraduate study will gain exposure to a community of over 10,000 students, and work alongside internationally recognised research teams. Leeds graduates may be eligible to receive a 10% bursary towards their postgraduate fees.

    Alumni

    University of Leeds supports its students even after they graduate in diverse ways. Leeds global network of alumni includes close to 270,000 people spread all over the world, providing students with lifelong careers advice from a wide network. In addition, alumni will also have access to the university’s Union facilities and libraries for up to five years after they graduate
