Mauritius is officially called the Republic of Mauritius, and is an island located in the Mascarene archipelago of the Indian Ocean. It is situated about 2,000 kilometres off the southeast coast of the African continent, and houses over 1.2 million people. This beautiful island sits on the submerged former continent of Mauritia, that broke away as India and Madagascar separated more than 60 million years ago. Mauritius has a volcanic origin with incredibly rich biodiversity. When you travel to Mauritius, you’ll find a great deal of mountains and rock formations around the island nation.
It is believed that Mauritius had Phoenician and Arab traders as its first inhabitants. The island was later controlled by the Dutch in the 16th century and was named after Maurice, Prince of Orange. Sometime between 1715 and 1810, Mauritius became a French colony and was officially known as Isle de France. In 1968, the island became an independent Commonwealth member country, and a republic in 1992.
Tuition and Cost of Living
Note that fees charged will depend largely on your choice of institution, as they can vary considerably. On average, you should expect to pay roughly MUR 90,000 and MUR 160,000 per annum. This cost will equally depend on the type of programme you study and the level. A number of Mauritian universities will require that you pay fees at the beginning of the academic year. Make sure that you have sufficient funds to finance your program, as the institution may ask for evidence of payment before you begin your studies.
Another thing to remember is that your living expenses will depend largely on the city you choose to live in. If you choose a bigger city then you will spend considerably more than a smaller city or town. Averagely, you should budget between MUR 207,000 and MUR 276,000 per year. This will take care of accommodation, groceries, travel, and other essentials. There is another cost that you will need to take note of- health insurance. That said, do well to buy a health insurance policy that will be valid for the period of your stay in Mauritius. Assuming you already have a health insurance policy, you will need to make sure that it is valid in Mauritius.
