    India’s tertiary education system is one of the biggest in the world, sitting just below China and the United States, and is well renowned for its engineering institutions. The country’s parliament made a declaration that institutes of technology known as “institutes of national importance” in 1961, and that helped the then newly established tertiary institutions to grow and improve their all round reputation.

    1. Indian Institute of Science

    This institution was founded in the beautiful city of Bangalore in the southwestern state of Karnataka sometime in 1979, and is one of the highest ranked Indian institutions.

    The university does only one undergraduate course: a four-year BA in science. The course’s core modules are physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and humanities. In the final year, students will take on an individual research project.

    Interestingly, the university focuses heavily on research, with well over 70 per cent of its student body going on to do PhD and MA research projects. On top of that, the institute has more than 75 graduates who won the  Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology.

    2. Indian Institute of Technology Ropar

    The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar–a new institution was founded in 2008 and is based in Rupnagar, a popular city in the Punjab region.

    Note that this institution is one of India’s Institutes of Technology, which does education in mostly STEM fields. 

    The university also runs out of three big campuses across Punjab. You’ll find 10 departments, that includes chemical engineering, chemistry. electrical engineering, mathematics and physics to mention a few. In addition, the centre for Biomedical Engineering is the institute’s multidisciplinary centre

    3. Indian Institute of Technology Indore

    The Indian Institute of Technology Indore is found in Madhya Pradesh. It remains one of few Institutes of Technology founded by the government of India. 

    The university runs three schools: basic sciences, engineering, and humanities and social sciences. 

    Undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in research based projects at the institution such as Promotion of Research and Innovation for Undergraduate Students.

    4. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

    The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, established in 1958, achieved its reputation by producing some of India’s most successful engineers and scientists and employing world renowned professors. The university does both long and short programs. It’s sited between India’s financial centre, Mumbai, and the resplendent Sanjay Gandhi National Park, where you will find see leopards, panthers and other wild animals.

    The institute is also home to Techfest, one of Asia’s biggest science and technology festivals, founded in 1998, as well as Mood Indigo, one of Asia’s biggest cultural university events.

    Popular alumni include Nitin Nohria,the 10th dean of Harvard Business School, the man behind the rupee sign Udaya Kumar, winner of Fulkerson and Knuth Prizes Ravindran Kannan and co-founder and chairman of the conglomerate Syntel, Bharat Desai.

    5. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

    The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is another public engineering university located in Hauz Kaus in Delhi. It was founded in 1961.

    It sits on 325-acre of land and is close to monuments such as the Qutub Minar and the Lotus Temple. 

    The Student Activity Centre can be used for extracurricular activities by local and international students. You’ll find a gymnasium, swimming pool, squash courts, table tennis rooms, a music room, a fine arts room, a robotics room and a committee room for quizzes and debating events.

    6. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

    The Indian Institute of Kharagpur is currently  the oldest Institute of Technology in the country, having been established in 1951. In addition, it is also the largest and most prestigious institution. 

    The university runs 19 departments offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The institution places focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs but equally offers courses in the humanities and social sciences.

    You’ll find a good number of student associations at the university covering a broad range of interests, including entrepreneurship, filmmaking and photography, technology and community work to mention a few.
