How to Apply to a Lebanese university
Do well to apply directly to your chosen Lebanese university, and provide documents such as your academic transcripts. If you intend to study at the bachelor’s level, you’ll require a high school certificate or equivalent, and at the same time will need a proof of an undergraduate degree if applying to study at postgraduate level.
Also required is your proficiency in the course’s language of study, which may be in English or French depending on the institution. Note that you do not need to provide this if you’re a first language speaker, and may not need to if you have previously studied in English or French language.
You may also have to provide one or two letters of recommendation, an essay or personal statement, and admission test results such as the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) for students starting business courses. Look at your chosen university’s official website to find out specific requirements for your program.

Student visas
Student visas will be required from international students of all countries except those from Syria (unlimited stay), while students from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are allowed to stay in Lebanon for up to three months without a visa. Note that all other students will need a visa, however you will not be allowed to enter Lebanon if you’ve visited Israel.
Do well to apply for a student visa from your nearest Lebanese embassy, pay a small fee and provide the following documents in French, Arabian or English:
- An acceptance letter from a Lebanese university;
- Sufficient proof that you have enough money to support yourself while studying in Lebanon, per tuition fees and living costs, or proof of a partial or full scholarship if you have one;
- Two passport-size photographs of yourself;
- A completed application form;
- Your passport, which should be valid for at least six months after you return to your home country
Tuition fees and living costs
Tuition fees vary between universities, and students may be charged on a per credit basis. For example, the American University of Beirut (AUB) charges around US$670 per credit for undergraduate humanities programs, and about US$970 for graduate engineering and architecture degrees, with a minimum of 12 credits per semester. What this means is that the degree courses mentioned above will cost at least US$8,040-11,640 per year. Once you’ve taken the amount of credits necessary to complete your course, you will have the option of taking additional credits for free.
The costs of living are relatively cheap in Lebanon, although nightlife and entertainment can add significantly to the amount you will spend! You’ll require around US$12,000 a year, not including entertainment costs, and should budget more cash if you plan to live in Beirut.
