    Universities in Japan will require a certificate proof that you have good English-language skills, so that you can easily succeed in their programs. Almost all Japanese universities accept these official English exams:

    Tuition fees in Japan

    Tuition fees at Japanese universities vary, depending on the university and the course. The average fee payment for the first-year unit is between 7,900 and 15,800 USD/year.

    However, it is possible to find study programs with tuition fees of 3,500 USD/year and others with more expensive fees that can go upto to 52,000 USD/year, usually for specialised courses such as Engineering, Business or Medicine.

    Accommodation Expenses

    Universities in Japan usually offer accommodation for international students. You will find a number of rooms and apartments with low rents but availability is usually limited.  A single room in a university dormitory will go for 270 USD/month and a double room will cost 180 USD/month.

    Another option for affordable accomodation is sharing an apartment; a room in a shared apartment would go for 200 and 500 USD.

    Healthcare

    International students who decide to live in Japan for a period of more than 3 months are expected to subscribe to the “National Health Insurance”. The moment you arrive in Japan, do well to register for the National Health Insurance at the nearest local office and pay the insurance premium.

    You will be required to pay the insurance premium monthly once registration is done.

    Food costs

    Local supermarkets in Japan sell products at affordable prices, and on average you would spend around 200 USD on your monthly groceries. Most restaurants charge high prices; a three- course meal could go for an average 40 USD. However, you will find plenty of street food at cheaper prices.

    How to Apply to a Master’s in Japan

    Once you’ve decided to study a Master’s degree at a university in Japan, you will have to put together the right documents to prove that you satisfy the university requirements. Do well to provide complete personal information, previous qualifications, financial information, and a personal statement.

    What documents do I need to provide to apply in Japan?

    Inorder to apply to a university in Japan you will likely be asked to provide some of the following documents:

    • birth certificate;
    • recent photos;
    • your passport or national identity card;
    • one or two reference letters from previous employers or teachers;
    • copies of past diplomas or certificates, plus your graduated Bachelor’s degree;
    • academic transcripts;
    • letter of intent;
    • Curriculum Vitae;
    • Some form of proof that you can support your stay in the country during your studies.

    Based on the course or specialization of your chosen Master’s, you may also be asked to provide scores for additional exams such as the GRE, GMAT or LSAT. Check if your programme requires any of these, or others.

    The list of documents required depend on the specific requirements of universities in Japan, so you may be asked to include additional documents. It’s also possible you’ll have to provide official English translations of your documents, or translations in the local language.

    Prove your English skills

    Since you’ll study an international degree in English, you’ll be required to present a language certificate. Some popular options for international students are IELTS, TOEFL or C1 Advanced language certificates. You’ll have to meet a minimum language score determined by the university, and your test scores should not be older than 1-2 years. If you fail to meet the minimum language requirements, you will have to improve your skills and scores by taking an English preparation course.

    Application deadlines for Japan

    General deadlines for applying to a Master’s in Japan are usually during summer (June-July), or in winter (January-February). Please bear in mind that some universities do not operate fixed application deadlines, which means you can apply whenever you are ready.
