Low Tuition Universities in Europe: Application Process for Universities in Norway, Czech and Turkey

Norway

european imageUniversities and colleges in Norway are generally of high quality and hold free tuition policy. Given the Norwegian government’s subsidy on the country’s education, both local and international students receive university education free of charge. However, private universities in Norway charge tuition fees on their academic programs and courses.

Application Process

Undergraduate studies
To be eligible for an undergraduate degree spot in any university in Norway, the international applicant should have completed his/her secondary school education at a recognized university in the world, such high school certificate should be equivalent to sitting for the Norwegian secondary school certificated program. This is generally the rudimentary requirement for entry into Norwegian universities. However, some students from some countries are at least expected to complete some studies at the university in addition to basic secondary school requirements.

Please note that some university programs have special admission requirements, usually specialist courses or fields like medicine and engineering. Please check with your proposed institution for detailed information about such specific qualifications.

Masters programs
Admission requirements into Masters Programs are individually decided by universities and Colleges based on the academic evaluation of applicants application materials. Applicants for Masters Programs would generally have obtained an undergraduate degree or its equivalent.

Czech

Higher education in Czech is certainly as old as modern civilization. Their education dates back to over six hundred years ago when the very famous emperor Charles IV founded the country’s first ever university of Prague. Their education is currently is regulated by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth. Although the language of instruction in Czech is Czech, but a great deal of other courses are offered in English for the benefit of international students.

Application Process
The main requirement for pursuing a Bachelor´s degree program or a Master´s degree program is the full completion of an accredited secondary general education or undergraduate degree program respectively. However, for students pursuing fine arts degrees, and who have had their “absolutorium” from a conservatoire would unfailingly be admitted. As noted earlier, admission into to a Master´s degree program is highly dependent on the completion of a Bachelor´s degree program or an equivalent in a local or international university. The procedure is the same for admission into Doctoral studies; applicants should successfully have completed their Master´s degree programs.. Students are also permitted to apply for more than one study program at various institutions and faculties.

Turkey

The number of international students coming to study in Turkey has really doubled since the year 2006. Note that during the 2011-2012 academic year, about 25,545 international students from across the world choose Turkey as a university destination. The main reasons for choosing Turkish universities include; high standard of education, low cost of living and numerous scholarships that provide monthly stipends.

Cost of Living

I           International students desiring to study in Turkey should budget roughly 400-500 USD monthly on housing, meals, clothing, and interstate transportation. However, academic books and other administrative fees are roughly 100-150 USD per semester.

Application Process

Note that In 2010, the Higher Education Institute in Turkey instituted new policies for Foreign Student Examination called YOS which regulates academic standards of education for foreign students studying at universities in Turkey.

As a result of this new arrangement, YOS exam won’t be conducted centrally by OSYM. rather, universities will be responsible for conducting their own entrance examinations.

Therefore, academically talented international students are encouraged to apply separately to each university. Before applying to any university program, you are strongly encouraged to get in touch with the Admissions Office of your university to determine what documents or exams to sit for.
