Low Tuition: How To Study Medicine In Malaysia

    We all know how expensive it is to study medicine abroad. If you are planning to study medicine in a foreign  country you have to choose a country where the tuition fees is not very expensive, so you don’t have to spend much money on the program. Countries like Russia, Malaysia, Ukraine, Belarus, etc offer medicine at a reduced cost. The tuition fees for medicine in these countries are very low and affordable.

    In today’s post we are going to discuss the cost of studying medicine in Malaysia, where the tuition fees is low and affordable. But before we go into that as usual let’s talk about other things like cost of living, admission requirements for study in Malaysia.

    Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country that occupies parts of the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo. It’s known for its beaches, rainforests and mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European cultural influences. The capital, Kuala Lumpur, is home to colonial buildings, busy shopping districts such as Bukit Bintang and skyscrapers such as the iconic, 451m-tall Petronas Twin Towers.

    Cost of living in Malaysia for students

    Cost of living can be said to the total amount a student needs to take care of his/her living expenses in a period of time. In Malaysia the cost of living is quite low and affordable. A student needs approximately $250 to $300 per month for expenses like feeding, accommodation, transportation, buying of books, recreation etc.

    Tuition fees for medicine in Malaysia

    The tuition fees for studying medicine in Malaysia are quite low and affordable. You should expect to pay between $7000 to $12000 per academic year. If this fees is too high for you, please consider studying medicine in countries like Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. Tuition fees in these countries range from $4000 to $6000 per year.

    Admission requirements

    The basic requirements for studying a Medical Degree in Malaysia are that you must have studied the following subjects:

    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Physics
    • Mathematics or Additional Mathematics

    As for A-Level, STPM or equivalent, the required subjects are:

    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Physics or Mathematics

    In addition to this, you must also proof your proficiency in the use of English language. Ielts or Toefl results are usually used to proof this proficiency in the use of English language. Most universities give waivers to applicants whose mother tongue is English or who studied in English language in their home country.

    Duration of medicine in Malaysia

    Medicine in Malaysia last for 5 years, so you should be prepared to pay tuition fees and take care of your living expenses for the 5 years you will pursue your medical program in Malaysia.

    How to become a doctor in Malaysia

    To become a medical doctor in Malaysia, you must follow the steps below:

    • Step 1: Complete a pre-medical course (e.g. A-Level, STPM, Foundation in Science) after SPM.
    • Step 2: Enrol in a MBBS Degree that’s typically 5 years long.
    • Step 3: Undergo 2 years of housemanship, which is a compulsory internship for all aspiring doctors. Once you’ve completed your housemanship, you will be a qualified medical officer.
    • Step 4: If you want to be a specialist (e.g. anaesthesiologist, gynaecologist, paediatrician), you will first need to work for several years as a medical officer to gain experience.
    • Step 5: Once you have accumulated some experience as a doctor, you can pursue your postgraduate studies, which takes about 4-5 years. You’ll also need to undergo 2-4 years of supervised training as a specialist.
    • Step 6: Finally, once you’ve met the criteria to be a specialist, you can register yourself with MMC as a specialist.

    So in summary, it takes about a total of 8-9 years to become a fully registered doctor from completing SPM, and more than 10 years to become a specialist in Malaysia.

    How to apply for admission to study medicine in Malaysia

    Application for admission into a Malaysian university is straightforward. The first thing you do is search for medical universities in the Malaysia, contact them and request for application materials. Many medical universities have made it possible for applicants to apply and manage their admissions online via the university’s portal. So if you have access to the university’s portal, you should be able to submit your application to any Malaysian university.

    How to apply for Malaysian student visa

    The procedure for applying for Malaysian student visa varies from one country to another. So I will advice that you contact the Malaysian embassy in your home country to find out your country specific requirements. But in the meantime, you can check out the following general requirements:

    • Original and two (2) copies of the approval letter from the Department of Immigration Malaysia.
    • A valid International passport – valid for 6 months. It should have at least two (2) free pages for visa stickers.
    • Two (2) copies of duly filled Malaysian visa application form – Form IMM.47
    • Two (2) passport-sized photographs
    • Visa application fee receipt
    • Valid and confirmed return flight ticket
