Ghana equally has a good number of accredited colleges, universities and polytechnic institutions, all of which are licensed to award degrees. You will also find a number of specialist tertiary institutions, such as the National Film and Television Institute, and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration. The oldest and most popular institution is the University of Ghana, which was established in 1948.
Ghana is officially known as the Republic of Ghana, and is located along the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. It borders three countries; the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Togo. It houses over 28.3 million people, and has beautiful palm-lined beaches, a working democracy and improving socioeconomic standards. Ghana’s climate is tropical, with two seasons; wet and dry. Temperatures usually vary throughout the year, with a high of 26 degrees and a low of about 23 degrees. You’ll find a number of tourist attractions, including Kakum National Park, Basua Beach and Lake Volta, and a lot more.
Tuition and Cost of Living In Ghana
Ghana’s currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS).
Note that your tuition fees will vary and depend on where you choose to study and what program you choose. On average, you should budget between $3,600 and $12,000 per year for an undergraduate degree course. For a postgraduate degree programme, you will be expected to pay between $3,600, and $12,000 per year. Some universities regularly offer scholarships for international students, do well to check with your institution about availability and your eligibility.
It is common practice for universities in Ghana to offer halls of residence for the duration of your program. What this means is that your living expenses will be less than if you had to live in a private accommodation. On average, you should put together roughly $430 and $ 1,350 per semester for halls of residence or a university hostel. If you decide to live in a private accommodation, your living costs will be higher. Do well to check with your institution about whether they offer campus accommodation.

Visas
If you decide to study in Ghana as an international student, you will be expected to obtain a student visa. This is a simple process that can be done either at the Ghanaian embassy in your home country, or via Ghana High Commission website.Note that you must be granted a visa before travelling to Ghana, or you will not be allowed entry into the country. Your institution will thus be able to provide assistance with the visa application process.
Language
Ghana’s official language is English. There are a total of 17 recognised national languages, and you would always hear African pidgin spoken around the country.
Since the official language is English, this is the language of instruction at higher education institutions. If English is not your main language, you may be required to provide evidence of your language proficiency. If you fail to meet the required standards, you may be able to take a language programme to help you improve subsequently.
