    Studying medicine (medicine and dentistry) in the States is really challenging in terms of time,tuition and intellectual effort. That explains why studying medicine in the USA is challenging and requires long hours.     Study Medicine in USA

    Unlike applying to study in Medicine in Europe, studying medicine in the U.S.A. generally begins after completion of four years of undergraduate study which includes meeting the pre-medical school course requirements along with obtaining a bachelor’s (B.A.) degree in any subject. The requirements (prerequisites) to study medicine in UASA vary from school to school, but almost always include biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry as main science courses. Some schools may require that you have taken other humanities, English, math, and science classes as well, so make sure you look into medical schools while you are still an undergraduate so you can choose your classes appropriately.

    Note that university medical study in USA is a 4 year course nicely divided into two roughly equal components: pre-clinical (consisting of didactic courses in the basic sciences) and clinical (clerkships consisting of rotations through different wards of a teaching hospital). This program on its own will lead to Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) or Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) depending on the medical school; both degrees make it possible for the holder to practice medicine after going through an accredited residency program.The number one prerequisite is to have a bachelor degree in biology, chemistry or other field relevant to medicine

    A few medical schools provide limited programs beginning after high school that combine undergraduate college study with medical education. Students are admitted provisionally to these programs based upon their high school credentials and, if their performance is satisfactory, are permitted to progress to the M.D. degree. This program generally takes six or seven years and admission to it is extremely competitive for foreign students.

    Medical candidates are expected to complet  the MCAT test, which stands for Medical College Admissions Test. This test will  basically determine your ability to think critically, solve problems, write clearly, as well as measure the student’s knowledge of various scientific concepts. A good score on the MCAT is key to getting into a good medical school.

    Application for admission to study medicine in USA  

    In order to gain admissions into a medical school in USA, international student should fulfill  the following criteria:

    • Undergraduate academic record (Bachelor degree),
    • Scores on the MCAT,
    • Letters of recommendation,
    • Extracurricular activities,
    • Personal qualities and
    • Commitment to medicine.

    Most medical schools request international students to apply through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) if they are undertaking a Doctor of Medicine degree or the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS) if they are undertaking a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine degree. We encourage to use these services because it will save you a lot of time. We are not saying some public medical schools do not accept international students.

    Medical Residency in USA

    The specialties in medicine have established their own curriculum, which specifies  the length and content of residency training required to practice in that specialty. These programs range from three years after medical school for internal medicine to about five years for surgery to seven to eight years for neurosurgery programs. Please note that this does not include research years that may last from one to four years if a Ph.D. degree is undertaken. Each specialty training program either incorporates an internship year to satisfy the requirements of state licensure, or stipulates that an internship year be completed before starting the program at the second post-graduate year.

    Please note that studying medicine in USA is among the most expensive across the world. Bearing in mind that there is no financial aid for local and international students, prospective applicants are expected to show that they have around 25,000$ per year. Also, most medical university schools that accept international students are private ones and they charge around 40,000$,

    International students who are able to afford the high cost of medical school programs and living expenses, and have a better chance of gaining admissions into USA medical schools, after getting their medical degree from the USA, he or she will be able to practice almost anywhere.
