How To Study Medicine in Cyprus

    Medical schools in Cyprus are gradually attracting international medical students from across the globe. Cyprus has four (4) universities which offer Undergraduate and postgraduate (medicine, dentistry pharmacy, veterinary medicine, etc.) The medical programs in Cyprus Universities are taught in English.

    University of Nicosia Medical School

    This is the largest medical school in Cyprus. University of Nicosia Medical School provides students with the opportunity to obtain a first-class education in Medicine. The school also aims to encourage students to practice medicine holistically and to promote health through disease prevention and research.

    The Medical School Curriculum

    The University of Nicosia Medical School curriculum is original and is based on the most current research in the field of medicine. The curriculum enables students to learn through case studies and have small group lectures for most of their courses. Curriculum development of this medical school has focused on the guidelines of professional bodies which emphasizes on social sciences because patients are social beings and to learn about social health behavior. Taking a full course with combined lectures in medical ethics all through the curriculum in a six-year medical programme, is crucial to produce qualified doctors who are aware that ethics is vital to good medical practice. The curriculum at this medical school in Cyprus has been intended to boost spiral learning.

    Programme Structure

    The medical program is organized around 12 academic semesters over a period of 6 years. Students are expected to take 30 ECTS credits in each semester, completing 360 ECTS credits after 12 semesters of full-time tuition.

    Phases of the MD Programme

    Phase I involves 1-3 years, Phase II comprises of year 4 and Phase III consists of years 5 and 6.

    Phase I (Basic Medical Sciences): During Phase I (years 1-3) students acquire knowledge in the basic medical sciences including general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, biology, anatomy, histology, biochemistry, physiology, genetics, microbiology and virology, immunology, pharmacology, medical genetics, general pathology, medical sociology, medical psychology, and medical ethics

    Phase II (Integrated Studies – Basic and Clinical Sciences): students are expected to take courses in haematology, systematic pharmacology, and public health and epidemiology during the first semester of Phase II (year 4). A course that involves students carrying out a research project is also taken.

    Phase III (Clinical Studies): The aim of Phase III (years 5 and 6) is to provide students with general experience in the clinical environment, particularly in hospitals and in the community, so that they can utilize their learning over the previous 4 years to practice their clinical, communication, diagnostic and reasoning skills on real patients.

    Admission Requirements

    High School Leaving Certificate

    • High School Leaving Certificate with 90% overall score and to include similar grades in Biology and one of either Chemistry, Physics or Maths.
    • Another option is to present GCE A’ Levels with grades ABB, to contain Biology and one of either Chemistry, Physics or Maths, and one more subject
    • International Baccalaureate with 32 general and a combined score of 16 at Higher Level, to contain Biology and at least Chemistry Physics or Maths.

    English Language Requirements

    • IELTS overall score of 6.5, with 6.5 in writing and a minimum of 6.0 in all other sections
    • TOEFL should be 213 (550 paper-based, 79 internet-based)
    • grade B in the IGCSE
    • score of 5 in English in the International Baccalaureate Standard Level (SL)
    • 70%  score in English in the European Baccalaureate.

    Students from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are excused from this requirement on the grounds that they graduated from an English speaking high school.

    • An Interview – either in person or online

    The objective of the interview is to establish whether you have the proper skills and attributes to complete the course successfully and to practice medicine professionally.
