American University is a coveted private research university founded sometime in 1893. In keeping to its name, the 90-acre campus of the university has campuses at the heart of the nation’s capital in Washington DC. The university was founded through an Act of Congress in 1892 as a result of the efforts of John Fletcher Hurst, a popular Methodist bishop. American University has two beautiful campuses, with the main campus found along Massachusetts Avenue and its East Campus on Nebraska Avenue. The American Eagles and its 14 sports teams represent the institution in NCAA Division I Patriot League, winning titles in wrestling, and hockey. As much as football is often regarded as an American sport, American University’s football team had been disbanded as far back as the 1940s as most of its members enlisted and served in World War II.
