    How to Apply

    In order to apply to study in Greece at undergraduate level, you’ll have to submit your application through the Hellenic Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs around July. Please do well to read the official admission guidelines here (English from page 12). You’ll be required to have all your documents translated into Greek and approved by the Hellenic Ministry plus the closest Greek embassy. If you are interested in studying a postgraduate program, you are able to send the necessary documentation directly to the institution you have chosen. While it’s a known fact that  Greece is not a part of the Lisbon convention (which is responsible for guaranteeing students’ qualifications are recognized across Europe), there is the possibility of applying to universities in Greece using a certificate which shows successful completion of secondary education in your home country or anywhere else. You will be required to provide authentic proof of proficiency in Greek or another language, based on the language in which you studied in. Most programs could have additional requirements, depending on your coursework and the institution.

    Visa Application Process

    If you hail from  the EU, you’ll be delighted to learn that you do not require a visa to study in Greece. However, if you are from a non-EU country, you are expected to obtain a student visa (type D) from your nearest Greek embassy or consulate. To get started, you will require need an official acceptance letter from your university in Greece, which has to be an institution duly certified and approved by the Greek Ministry of Education. Please do well to contact the Greek Embassy in your country, or connect with the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, for detailed info on the list of the documents required for a student visa and information on how to submit your application. You will be required to attend an interview for final visa approval.

    All students, both from EU and non-EU countries, must prove they have health insurance, enough money to support themselves during their expected stay, and a valid passport.

    Tuition Fees

    Universities in Greece typically do not charge domestic students tuition fees at undergraduate level. As Greece is a member state of the European Union, this free tuition provision also applies to all students who come from EU/EEA countries, across all public universities and colleges. The other thing is that some master’s programs do not charge fees, while students from non-EU/EEA countries will have to pay tuition fees at bachelor’s level. These fees are not stagnant, they vary depending on the institution, but are usually pegged at  €1,500 (~US$1,680) per year, including course textbooks.

    You will be pleased to know that living expenses in Greece are some of the lowest in Europe (although sadly this is as a result of the country’s recent economic difficulties). As expected, it is much more expensive to live in a large city, but overall you should budget around US$8,400 per year.
