2015/2016 MasterCard Foundation Scholarship Program at Michigan State University

    micThe MasterCard Foundation has partnered with Michigan State University to provide full tuition assistance to undergraduate and graduate students from Sub-Saharan African countries. The university will be granted about $45 million in funding from the MasterCard foundation to support about 185 scholars throughout the nine-year support program, which will cater for 100 four-year undergraduates and 85 master’s degree students. It is worthy to note that MSU will host the most scholars among the six U.S. MasterCard partner institutions.

    The scholarships target Students who have shown demonstrated academic talent, and are economically disadvantaged as well as have a personal commitment to give back to their countries on returning to Africa.

    Through financial, academic, social and post-graduation support, The Scholars Program at Michigan would ensure young people are well equipped with the skills and competencies required to stimulate economic growth and social development in their respective countries.

    How to Apply

    Undergraduate Students

    1. In order to apply for the MCF program at Michigan State University, you should first of all apply to MSU and arrange to have all required supporting materials forwarded to the Michigan.

    IMPORTANT: Please remember to save your Applicant ID and password during the application process. You will need these Applicant ID details to complete the MCF Scholarship Application.


    1. Only admitted students to Michigan State University will be eligible for this scholarship. To maximize consideration, apply early and ensure that the University receives all required admission application materials by February 1, 2015.

    To monitor your application status for admission you can log in to your personalized online student portal at with your MSU Applicant ID and password.

    1. Complete this undergraduate student scholarship application and email it as an attachment  (Word document or scanned copy) to no later than February 15, 2015.

    If submitting a hand-written scholarship application, ensure the document and scanned copy are clearly legible.

    1. Provide a copy of the MCF Recommendation Form to an appropriate individual per the form instructions.  Have your recommender complete this form and email it as an attachment to no later than February 15, 2013.


    International Student Admission Requirement

    *Complete the application for admission.

    *Prepare your required personal statement.

    *Pay the $50 non-refundable application fee (drawn on U.S. funds) using Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, or an electronic check (online applications only).

    *Request that all secondary schools attended, colleges or universities attended, or examination boards send original or attested copies of all transcripts, diplomas, mark sheets, and certificates directly to Michigan State University in an official, sealed envelope. In addition, where the original documents are not issued in English, also provide an official English translation of each document.

    *Submit official high school transcripts if you have completed fewer than 28 semester credit hours.

    *Provide proof of English proficiency (sent directly from the testing agency) if your first language is not English (TOEFL®, IELTS, SAT, MSUELT, or MELAB accepted). MSU’s TOEFL® and SAT code is 1465. International students are encouraged, though not required, to submit SAT scores, if available. SAT scores are useful for determining academic admissibility, scholarship eligibility, and for placement in math and English composition classes. When scheduling testing, note that it may take a month or longer from the time of the request to send scores until they are received and recorded in the Office of Admissions.

    *Please do not send letters of recommendation, photographs, portfolios, or additional personal essays unless requested by the Office of Admissions. Doing so will delay processing of your application.
